A good friend and mentor saw that I was painting dogs and said “I don’t have a dog for you to paint, but I have a husband!” And that led to trying my hand at people portraits! I played around with some ethereal-seeming celebrities to practice first (Princess Diana and Steven Tyler, obv), and then went for it.
Another friend heard I was painting said husband and made the genius point that I should be painting portraits of both of them – so I did!
And yet another friend saw my portraits and mentioned my name to Yemi to potentially be included in his yearly event African Americans of Excellence, where local artists paint portraits of the honorees that are auctioned off for charity. Read more about that here.
