“So Below” – Mural
First up is this undersea alien mural that I’ve been calling SO BELOW, which is half of the phrase “as above, so below”. (I have the AS ABOVE mural design already in my head waiting to be painted somewhere HINT HINT).
While I’ve helped paint murals with other people, and have chalk-marketed plenty of windows and walls, this was my first time painting an entire gigantic mural all by myself.
This mural was painted on the third floor of a historic downtown Frederick row-home, in a room where lots of grandkids sleep when they visit their grandparents. The homeowner gave me free rein on the design, which you KNOW I love. When I asked the youngest grandson what kinds of things he liked, he said he loved Baby Beluga and I immediately started picturing ocean floor scenes – but the grandkids’ ages ranged from 3 to teens, so I wanted the mural theme to work for everyone. And since I love anything with an alien theme… here it is.
The Yogamour Dragonfly – Chalk Marker Garage Door
The way it feels to see my name on the wall under a REALLY cool piece of art at my favorite yoga studio… it’s hard to explain. Sometimes when I’m taking class, I catch a glimpse of it and think, “MAN THAT DRAGONFLY IS SO COOL” and then I think, “SHIT. That’s MY name! I did that!” I’m gonna repeat my favorite word again, because, really… it is SO COOL.
Yogamour, a yoga and healing arts center, has dragonfly imagery all around their studio, and they have an interesting and meaningful dragonfly hanging on a canister light in their studio – you can find the story about it here. For them, the dragonfly is a symbol that transformation and resilience are always possible.
For me, it’s a reminder that the very colorful ideas that show up in my head can become actual, physical things. Every time I take a class at the studio, I’m reminded that I AM creative and that my creativity can become a reality.
